What is a community connection?
- Who did what where?
A Community Connection is project founded by us, Siri Ekbom and Per Winroth during our education at the Swedish creative management school “The Kaospilots”.
We have made a concept of how to educate the computer illiterate for free and make them a part of the global community and let them take part of the benefits that globalization brings through opening free internet centers and offer education in internet and computer use in slum areas around India and other developing countries.
The first step towards realizing our plan is opening up one of these centers in Dharavi, Mumbai.
- The goal! The vision! The purpose! Our Intention!
INTERNET INTO THE SLUM FOR FREE! This was the initial name of the project. It also sums up the goal for the project. Our vision was of course set even higher! We wish to do several centers in Mumbai and India, FOR FREE. They are to be sustainable by financing through micro finance solutions. The instigations of each center were to be founded by sponsors through out the world, interested in connecting new communities to the global world. This is our vision.
The purpose? We want to give everyone a chance to be part of the global community!
- How did we organize ourselves?
We had a two person strong organization consisting of Siri Ekbom and Per Winroth.
Siri was project leader, making sure progress was made and that the goal was reached. She also was the contact person with all involved parties. Per was in charge of bringing the technical aspects in to place as well as producing material needed for the project such as, making pdf, homepage, flyers etc. Per was also in charge of economics during the project. Some tasks we worked on together with no appointed responsibility; a task such as budget was made together.
- What was the outcome of the project
By the end of the project time for the Kaospilots outpost here in Mumbai we started one center in Dharavi. 5 new computers with one-year warranty were placed in a community center where English is taught on a regular basis. Internet was drawn into the center and all computers connected to the Internet via a 512 kb/s cable connection with a monthly up and download of 10 gb.
Financing was made through collaboration with Eyework’s who were shooting a reality show for a Belgian television channel. They invested 5000 euro into the project after agreeing to A Community Connections’ business plan and agreeing with the vision of A Community Connection.
Teachers will be in the center providing general directions so that the community on their own can explore and learn how to use the computers and internet in their own pace and guided by curiosity and the longing to learn.
